Even though Nordhavnen is already surrounded by water on three sides, the new district will also be intersected by small canals and basins. There will be access to the water via steps, low promenades, piers - all piers will be open to the public.

WELCOME TO NORDHAVNEN

Nordhavnen is Scandinavia’s largest metropolitan development project. The area is to be transformed from a dense industry and harbour area into an attractive urban city district in Copenhagen.

In the coming years, the character of the southernmost area of Nordhavnen will change considerably, from a harbour area used as a free port with extensive use of space into an urban area with districts laid out as small islets directly connected with the water: a versatile, diverse and inclusive city district. Delimited by the Nordbassin, the Kronløbsbassin and the Kronløb, Inner Nordhavn is the first of these districts to be realised. It will have room for about 3.000 residents and workplaces for 6-7.000 people.

Planning for the Inner Nordhavn district began with an international design competition in 2009. Subsequent work on the winning entry includes development strategies, development plans and a number of planning themes that will govern the future development of Nordhavnen. Copenhagen City Council has adopted the required local plan. We are thus ready to carry out the first stage of the biggest and most ambitious urban project in Copenhagen in recent years.

The realisation of the first urban spaces and buildings began in the autumn of 2012, and inauguration is scheduled for 2014.

THE ÅRHUSGADE DISTRICT

The Århusgade district (Århus­gadekvarteret), the first district in Nordhavnen, will be developed to consist of at least 350,000 square metre new buildings: fifty percent will be dwellings, fifty percent commercial buildings. About 7,000 people will work in the Århusgade district, about 3,000 will live there.

ENORMOUS POTENTIAL

The heavy industry in the Port of Copenhagen has gradually disappeared, but at the same time the city has grown, and is growing still. Within the next 14 years, the City of Copenhagen expects 60,000 more Copenhageners. Therefore, the city has to grow physically, for instance in the harbour areas. Where once were industries and harbour, new city quarters will appear.

Nordhavnen is a 200-hectare area currently used for a number of harbour-related activities. Located on the Øresund coast, the district will offer direct access to the sea, as well as a multitude of recreational urban spaces and public facilities, and with its location only four kilometres from the city centre of Copenhagen and its easy access to the city’s infrastructure, Nordhavnen is likely to become a unique city district in Copenhagen. 

TIME LINE 

In late May 2008, the CPH Port and City Development launched an open international ideas competition for Nordhavnen, the competition for the layout of Nordhavnen was concluded in March 2009. The ‘Nordholmene – Urban Delta’ entry was selected as the winning entry, to form the basis for further work. At the same time, it was decided to appoint COBE, SLETH Modernism, Polyform and Rambøll consultants to assist in the development of Nordhavnen.

In the summer of 2009, quality assurance of the design and the development strategies on which it is based was carried out in close collaboration between CPH City & Port Development, the consultants and the City of Copenhagen. In parallel, a number of public meetings, open house events and exhibitions were arranged to involve local residents.

In December 2011, the City of Copenhagen adopted the local plan for the Århusgade quarter. As a result, there will be about 350,000 sqm of new buildings, while some of the existing buildings will be preserved.
