Ørestad

The most recent and most green quarter in Copenhagen borders the more than 2,000 hectares of nature of the commons: Amager Fælled and Kalvebod Fælled. More than 6,000 residents have already moved in; they and more than 10,000 jobs make this a vibrant city quarter. Get the story of how by now partly finished Ørestad developed so far, starting with ideas on drawing boards. Ørestad consists of four quarters, each featuring its own identity: Ørestad Nord having universities and DR Byen (the home of the Danish Broadcasting Company), Amager Fælled with dwellings and green areas, Ørestad City with international companies, and Ørestad Syd, where the first dwellings border Kalvebod Fælled. Ørestad is the modern Copenhagen, a mixed city with prize-awarded architecture and exciting history.

A classic Ørestad tour starts with an introduction of the quarter with a model of Ørestad – afterwards participants may want to explore the architecture and the urban spaces of the quarter by bike, car or the Metro. On the tour you will see 8TALLET, Ørestad Gymnasium, the city park, the VM housing and the VM Mountain, DR Byen and the Tietgen Residence.

Nordhavnen

During the next forty years, Nordhavnen will change into a quite new, sustainable city quarter in Copenhagen, respecting existing business activities, the harbour atmosphere and buildings worth preserving. Learn more about the most ambitious urban development project in Scandinavia and the challenges it faces – and experience the harbour atmosphere of Nordhavnen today.

The tour starts with a general introduction to the future plans for the area. Afterwards, participants may want to explore the quarter by bike, car or boat. You will pass the historical Århusgade-neighbourhood of Frihavnen, restored warehouses and the container harbour, ending up with a walk in the fishing harbour, enjoying the view of the Sound.

Sydhavnen

In 2009, Sluseholmen was awarded “Byplanprisen”, an award for excellent urban planning, as recognition of its alternative and impressive urban atmosphere. With its 1,340 family-friendly dwellings, Sluseholmen offers an alternative to the garden dwellings of the suburbs. Here the dwellings may be described as harbour flats organized in small blocks, narrow houses of varying heights and great architectural variation.

The canals form the basis principle in the area. Therefore, all flats command a view either of the harbour or of a canal. The canals form eight islands whose names end in -holm meaning islet – Askholm, Egholm, Kidholm, etc. The buildings are quite close and form en suite block systems, sharing central yards.

The canal area of Sluseholmen must be experienced on foot. Taking the boat you may choose to experience Teglværkshavnen and pass Sydhavnen and Islands Brygge, Havnestad, Havneholmen and Teglholmen.
The boat trip through Sydhavnen may be combined with Nordhavnen, so that the entire Port of Copenhagen is covered.
