The Coherent City

In Nordhavnen there will be easy access to sustainable modes of transport. Short distances from housing and workplaces to public transport, bicycle paths, green areas, public institutions and commercial facilities are characteristic of the entire district.

Pedestrians, cyclist and cars share the roads in Nordhavnen: At least one-third of all traffic in the area should be cyclists, at least one-third should be public transport, and car traffic should account for no more than one-third.

The various neighbourhoods in Nordhavnen will be connected with each other and with the rest of Copenhagen by a green loop. In the loop you will find a new express bicycle route and a metro on raised rails. The express bike routes will allow unhindered cycling – as fast as you wish. The plan for the new city is to rethink traditional urban planning, where the cars are the predominant feature in the cityscape, in Nordhavnen pedestrians and cyclist will set the pace.
