WELCOME TO NORDHAVNEN
ENORMOUS POTENTIAL
The heavy industry in the Port of Copenhagen has gradually disappeared, but at the same time the city has grown, and is growing still. Within the next 14 years, the City of Copenhagen expects 60,000 more Copenhageners. Therefore, the city has to grow physically, for instance in the harbour areas. Where once were industries and harbour, new city quarters will appear.
Nordhavnen is a 200-hectare area currently used for a number of harbour-related activities. Located on the Øresund coast, the district will offer direct access to the sea, as well as a multitude of recreational urban spaces and public facilities, and with its location only four kilometres from the city centre of Copenhagen and its easy access to the city’s infrastructure, Nordhavnen is likely to become a unique city district in Copenhagen. Development of Århusgadekvarteret - the neighbourhood located closest to the existing urban districts of Copenhagen, and the first step in the development of Nordhavnen - is expected to begin in 2011-12.
SUSTAINABLE CITY – THE COPENHAGEN WAY
Nordhavnen will be a district of small islets close to the waterfront and a a diverse, mixed city with room for everyone. The new district will be developed over the next forty to fifty years. When fully developed, the site will feature buildings with a total floor area of up to four million square metres, providing living space for 40,000 inhabitants and workspace for another 40,000 inhabitants.
Nordhavnen is probably the most extensive and most ambitious metropolitan development project in Scandinavia in the years to come. As an urban development project, Nordhavnen spearheads efforts to improve climate conditions and show how cities can help reverse climate change without losing out on quality of life, welfare and democracy.
The new city district will be based on a holistic approach so as to ensure that the whole will be bigger and better than the sum of the individual elements.
TIME LINE
In late May 2008, the CPH Port and City Development launched an open international ideas competition for Nordhavnen, the competition for the layout of Nordhavnen was concluded in March 2009. The ‘Nordholmene – Urban Delta’ entry was selected as the winning entry, to form the basis for further work. At the same time, it was decided to appoint COBE, SLETH Modernism, Polyform and Rambøll consultants to assist in the development of Nordhavnen.
In the summer of 2009, quality assurance of the design and the development strategies on which it is based was carried out in close collaboration between CPH City & Port Development, the consultants and the City of Copenhagen. In parallel, a number of public meetings, open house events and exhibitions were arranged to involve local residents.
Before development really starts, the City of Copenhagen must adopt the local plan for the Århusgade quarter. That is expected to happen at the end of 2011. There will be about 350,000 sqm of new buildings, while some of the existing buildings will be preserved.
